Liam Neeson was caught off‑guard when he learned that Meryl Streep will voice Aslan in Netflix’s upcoming Narnia reboot.
Key points
- Liam Neeson was unaware of the Netflix Narnia reboot and Meryl Streep’s casting as Aslan until the interview.
- The film will be directed by Greta Gerwig and is scheduled for a February 12, 2027 theatrical release.
- A high‑profile cast accompanies Streep, and the trailer features Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.”
During a recent interview with ScreenRant, Oscar‑nominee Liam Neeson admitted he had no idea Netflix was reviving the Narnia franchise, let alone that Meryl Streep would replace him as the voice of the lion Aslan.
When the interviewer disclosed Streep’s involvement, Neeson responded, “Meryl is playing Jesus Christ?” – a reference to Aslan’s well‑known allegorical link to the incarnation of Jesus Christ in C.S. Lewis’s books. He added, “Well, if you’re going to make Christ a lady, nobody better than Meryl.”
Neeson’s surprise at the casting news
The conversation then turned to the film’s director. Upon hearing Greta Gerwig’s name, Neeson simply said, “Okay. Wow!” indicating both surprise and curiosity about Gerwig’s take on the classic tale.
The new adaptation, titled Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, is slated to hit theaters on February 12, 2027. Its ensemble includes David McKenna as Digory, Beatrice Campbell as Polly, Emma Mackey as Jadis, Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew, and Carey Mulligan as Flora, with a trailer set to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.”
Greta Gerwig attached as director
Former co‑star Anna Popplewell, who played Susan Pevensie in the earlier films, said she has already watched the trailer and called it “really exciting,” adding she “can’t wait to watch it.” While Streep’s casting has sparked some backlash, members of C.S. Lewis’s family have publicly supported the new adaptation, according to the Yahoo.com article.
