A Rockland County jury found Anthony Mitchell guilty of murder and attempted murder for the 2022 shooting that claimed the life of 17‑year‑old Treynahel Cineus.

Key points

  • Anthony Mitchell was found guilty of murder and attempted murder for the 2022 shooting that killed 17‑year‑old Treynahel Cineus.
  • He was acquitted of criminal possession of a weapon but already serves an 11‑year sentence for a separate child‑exploitation case.
  • Sentencing for the murder convictions is set for Dec. 23, 2026, with a possible range of 15 years to life up to 25 years to life.
  • District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh emphasized that the verdict aims to provide closure for the victim’s family.

A three‑week trial in Rockland County Court concluded on Oct. 29, 2026, with a jury convicting 27‑year‑old Anthony Mitchell of murder and attempted murder after prosecutors said he and other suspects opened fire on Treynahel Cineus and his aunt as they parked at the Meadowlanes apartment complex in Spring Valley on July 8, 2022.

Cineus, who was 17 at the time, was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital but later died from his injuries, while his aunt survived the attack. The incident was described by district attorney Thomas E. Walsh II as a “senseless act of gun violence” that stole a young life.

Trial outcome and charges

Mitchell was acquitted of the separate charge of criminal possession of a weapon. He also faces a pending sentence for an earlier conviction: earlier this year he received an 11‑year prison term for enticement and coercion of a minor after manipulating a teenage girl into sending explicit photographs when she was 13 and 14.

Under New York law, Mitchell now faces a minimum sentence of 15 years to life and a maximum of 25 years to life for the murder and attempted murder convictions. His formal sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 23, 2026.

Details of the 2022 shooting

District Attorney Walsh said the verdict offers the victim’s family “some measure of justice and peace,” though he acknowledged that no court decision can undo the loss of Treynahel Cineus.
